Main Description
The Capacity Manager must collaborate with the appropriate stream managers to analyze and provide resolutions on technology
capacity issues and requests.
The Capacity Manager must collaborate with the Event Manager in order to support technology capacity related events.
Whenever alerts or exceptions are raised, due to increase or decrease in capacity of technology components, which may
impact the SLA, Capacity Manager can be looped in for analysis and recommendation of appropriate actions. The Capacity
Manager should also analyze alert trends and recommend improvements to the Event Management process from the technology
capacity perspective.
If there are incidents due to insufficient technology capacity or serious performance degradation due to capacity
shortages, the Capacity Manager must coordinate with the Incident Manager and provide assistance in investigation and
suggest fixes. These resolutions would typically include tuning of the capacity components.
During Problem Management, if for certain problems the underlying cause is identified as poor performance or capacity
issue, then Capacity Manager must suggest solutions or at least workarounds for resolution.
Capacity Manager plays a key role in approval of changes via Change Management process. Capacity Manager is responsible to
assess the impact of change on existing capacity and identify if any additional capacity is needed to accommodate the
change. The overall effect of the change, on capacity needs to be closely monitored by Capacity Manager. Based on the
assessment of change from capacity perspective, he must provide the approval on change. the Capacity Manager must approve
or reject the change, also state the risks associated with the change.
Based on the business needs or Client decisions, existing service may undergo change or new service may be added. In such
cases, Capacity Manager should assess the impact of the change on the existing IT Services and components and its overall
technology architecture and design. For this, sizing of the changed components must be done. IT components, applications
which should be replaced or tuned to enable the agreed capacity targets must be identified and listed. Technical
feasibility, financial and legal impact, business impact etc. for carrying out the change to the capacity components must
be analyzed. The Capacity Manager may also need to assess different scenarios to recommend the appropriate action. The
Capacity Manager must also identify the changes required to the existing IT product architecture and design documents to
incorporate the capacity changes and the associated risks.
